What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Gear Hub uses a third party upload protection system. This will hide uploaded content by adding an index.php file on the root of the uploads directory.

ID uploads will be saved to Gear Hub external hard drive as a security measure to protect the listed and hired items from theft.

Contact forms

Gear Hub collects your email address, name, phone number, and property address where your item is located. Only your username and pin drop location is made public while Gear Hub store the other contact information in our site for administrative purposes. 

Email contact 

Gear Hub send automatic emails to users email addresses as part of the peer to peer hiring process. Users can not opt out of these emails as they are necessary for users to be informed of site actions. Gear Hub also use a CRM system which stores users email addresses for Gear Hub news and updates. Users can opt out of receiving these promotional emails from Gear Hub. To unsubscribe from promotional emails, users need to contact alex@gearhub.co.nz or select “unsubscribe” from the footer of an email. 

Location information

Gear Hub collects your location as part of the user process in order for “hirers” to see where your items are located. Gear Hub have hidden your written address from users but your pin drop GPS location will be visible to all who visit the website. Gear Hub recommend that your username should not disclose any personal information in order to protect your identity. 

Insurance documentation

Gear Hub encourages that users supply proof of their insurance policies if required. This information is sent to, and visible to, Gear Hub administration only. It may also be shared between users at their own discrepancy. It is not stored on the Gear Hub site. 

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

If required by law enforcement agents, Gear Hub is permitted, by law, to disclose personal information of users to law enforcement agents. 

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. There are no details of your contact information available in your profile. All communication is done over the website and if you choose to share your contact information once the rental transaction is complete then this is by your own choice. Gear Hub ask for you to enter your name, address, and phone number. Gear Hub will use these for administrative purposes only. Third party system Mailchimp will store your contact details on their server. Their privacy policy is at this link: https://mailchimp.com/legal/privacy/

If you do not wish to share your contact details with Gear Hub then we can not allow your use of the website as it puts our other users at risk. 

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

Use profiles can be made automatically but listings must be approved by Gear Hub administration. Users must create a profile in order to rent items off www.gearhub.co.nz.
